Alexander Mogilny, was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in 1988 after secretly flying out of Russia. He set the path for future Russian hockey players who wanted to play in the NHL. Mogilny was the first Russian player to defect to the West. He was also the first Russian to play in an all-star game, the first European to score 76 goals in a single season and the first European to ever captain an NHL team. In 2000, he helped the New Jersey Devils win the Stanley Cup.
